Take A Moment

When was the last time you took the time to reflect on and appreciate what you’ve actually accomplished as an entrepreneur? And I mean a serious reflection.

Forget, if you will for the moment, the sleepless nights, the long days, the equipment failures and those far too frequent moments of indecision. Stop what you’re doing for just a minute, to truly appreciate how far you’ve come.

At some point you decided to embark on a journey that few if any of your friends or family would even dare.  Whatever your motivation, you struck out on your own with the goal to be self sufficient. You’ve dared to dream and have succumbed to its promise.

It’s been said that “if it was easy everyone would do it” and being a business owner is rarely easy. You may be disappointed that you’ve yet to make the income you’d hoped, but consider for moment, that at the end of the day whatever income you enjoy, was the result of your ability and yours alone.

What makes you, the entrepreneur unique, is that you live and die by your daily decisions. There is no safe harbour where you can run when the seas are stormy. The best you can hope for is calmer seas and fair winds and that your good decisions outweigh the bad ones.

For the vast majority of us, success is measured in years and not overnight. Yet we have learned to appreciate those daily accomplishments much like hitting the perfect golf shot and knowing the next one may not be so sweet. But at the end of the day, only our definition of success is all that really matters.

Seriously, take a moment, give yourself a break and appreciate what you’ve already achieved. It may not be perfect yet, but it’s yours to make it better and you’re doing what most people would be too afraid to try.

Just don’t take too long to reflect, you’ve got work to do.

  1. My wife and I quit our jobs after 9/11 and started a business. The world went a bit crazy, so what the heck, why not us? There have been many sleepless nights after almost 10 years. Unless your in your own business, you just don’t understand the ups and downs. We’ve found that being in business almost forces one to appreciate the small things in life. Being around computers all day, we’ve found the weekend breaks away from them keep us sane. We have also developed an appreciation for the small things in life. The friendships with other business people , taking off a day to ride roller coasters or contribute to our community. After all this time it’s nice to know we still enjoy it. Now I better get back to closing this web deal. After 10 years I’m sure one day we’ll be called an overnight success!

      Hey Richard,

Thanks for reading and commenting. We really do need to take time and smell the rose. Why we don’t do it more often is still a mystery to me. Thanks Greg
